Ohio State football’s pass rush legacy showed up in Super Bowl: Buckeye Breakfast

Buckeye Breakfast, the legacy of Ohio State football’s pass rush, made an appearance in the Super Bowl.

Ohio — Ohio State football fans never really saw what Nick Bosa and Chase Young could be together near their primes.

The world saw what the combo could do Sunday night, and it nearly led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl LVIII victory.

That pass rush helped limit the Kansas City to three first-half points, but Patrick Mahomes eventually rallied the Chiefs for

a 25-22 overtime victory and repeat Super Bowl championship.

The Washington Commanders moved Young to the 49ers midway through the season, and he recorded 2.5 of his 7.5 sacks with

the eventual NFC champions. He is now a free agent after the Commanders declined to pick up the option year on his original four-year contract.

Bosa made the first of his two tackles for loss on the Chiefs’ first offensive play. He ended with six total tackles. Bosa was named to his fourth Pro Bowl this season after accumulating 10.5 sacks.

Mr. Accuracy

Ohio State football Class of 2025 commit Tavien St. Clair has begun following a Buckeye quarterback tradition of sorts by winning a national prospect events.

St. Clair won the accuracy award at Nike’s “The Next Ones” event in Las Vegas last week. He beat out two of the three quarterbacks ranked ahead of him — LSU commit Bryce Underwood and Tennessee commit George MacIntyre.

OSU women take charge

While Ohio State men’s basketball struggles, the Buckeye women continue to thrive.

On Sunday, they defeated Michigan State 86-71, with Celeste Taylor (20 points), Rebeka Mikulasikova (19), and Jacy Sheldon (18) leading the charge.

With Iowa’s loss at Nebraska, the Buckeyes now hold exclusive control of first place in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State has won 11 straight games, and the Cornhuskers visit Value City Arena on Wednesday.

Former Buckeye to NFL

Phil Matusz, a former assistant strength and conditioning coach at Oregon State University under Mickey Marotti, is still climbing the ranks. The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired him as their new strength and conditioning coach.

Matusz has spent the last four seasons at Boston College, where he was hired by former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley after taking over as head coach.
