Ohio State Adds Ex-Michigan LB Transfer
Michigan may be at the top of the college football standings, but one Wolverine is crossing enemy lines this summer. Linebacker Joey Velazquez has transferred to Ohio State as a graduate student, according to Eleven Warriors. This spring, the former 2019 three-star recruit will enroll as a walk-on at Ohio State.
Velazquez, a native of Columbus, appeared in 16 games for the Wolverines over five seasons. His greatest season was in 2021, when he appeared in ten games and made a career-high six tackles. The 6-2, 222-pound defender concluded his Wolverines career with eight tackles and one fumble recovery.
Velazquez will aim to penetrate Ohio State’s two-man depth chart with the help of James Laurinaitis. The former All-American
Buckeyes standout recently shared a photo of all of the linebackers, including Velazquez, watching Super Bowl LVIII at his
Columbus house. With the addition of Velazquez, the Buckeyes have added seven transfers through the portal since their 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.
Top players such as quarterback Will Howard (Kansas State), running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss), center Chase
McLaughlin (Alabama), and safety Caleb Downs (Alabama) should be ready to start in Week 1.
Tight end Will Kacmarek (Ohio) could take over as starter in spring practice after John Mackey finalist Cade Stover left.
Last season with the Bobcats, the 6-6 St. Louis native had 22 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
Following Nick Saban’s retirement, Ohio State recruited Julian Sayin, a five-star recruit and former Alabama signee.
Sayin, On3’s No. 2 2024 quarterback recruit, will battle for the starting job with Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholtz, and four-star
recruit Air Noland, but may redshirt to save a season of eligibility.
The Buckeyes open the 2024 season at Ohio Stadium against Akron on Aug. 31.
