John Calipari has been disastrous in clutch situations
With seconds remaining, down 86-84, the Kentucky Wildcats were not victorious against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday at Rupp Arena against an unranked squad. For the first time since 1966, it was the program’s third straight home loss.
That is partially to be expected in that circumstance, but over the past few seasons, coach John Calipari has saw his team play terribly poorly in the final seconds of one-score games, which is a very worrying trend.
With a challenging schedule ahead of them, the Wildcats will surely fall out of the top 25 with a loss like this. Kentucky has to start putting together a winning streak badly because of their incredibly skilled team.
Although injuries have been an issue, the Cats’ strength at home has also been lacking, as has their ability to shut out opponents. Kentucky has a top-notch offense, but they are only 6-4 in conference games. There are five players with double digit averages.
Cal’s late-game coaching has also been called into doubt due to his recent problems and clutch issues. Even though he’s demonstrated himself to be one of the greatest at finding and developing player talent, the numbers speak for themselves.
It will be interesting to watch how things work out.
