Green Bay Packers hire Boston College coach Jeff Hafley as their defensive coordinator
Green Bay, Wisconsin — The Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley will be hired by Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur to serve as his defensive coordinator, the organization revealed on Wednesday night. Hafley has taught defensive backs for the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Bucs, and Cleveland Browns. However, he has spent the last five seasons coaching in college, spending the last four at Boston College. He worked as Ohio State’s co-coordinator for a year before that.
The hiring of Hafley is unexpected. It was widely believed that LaFleur was looking for a previous head coach or coordinator, or an NFL assistant coach, as no media outlet mentioned that he had spoken with Hafley. Joe Barry was fired following the Packers’ playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Hafley will take over for Barry.
Despite their lack of collaboration, LaFleur and Hafley are close friends; Hafley coached defensive backs in San Francisco under former defensive coordinator and current New York Jets coach Robert Saleh. Saleh might have provided LaFleur with a reliable assessment of Hafley’s potential as an NFL play caller. Hafley was employed in San Francisco during the time that Mike, LaFleur’s brother, was an assistant coach. LaFleur may have also received information from Matt Malaspina, the college scouting director for the Packers, who was present.
