Buckeyes ‘Better Off’ With Chip Kelly Over Bill O’Brien?
The Buckeyes have changed offensive coordinators again, signing former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly to replace Bill O’Brien, who was recently hired by Boston College.
The Buckeyes have hired Chip Kelly, a former UCLA head coach, to replace Bill O’Brien, who recently joined Boston College as offensive coordinator.
One media member, SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum, believes Ohio State is improving.
Finebaum stated on WJOX and “McElroy and Cubelic In the Morning” that Chip Kelly is a better fit for Ohio State than Bill
O’Brien was.”The fact that Chip Kelly took the position demonstrates how little confidence he had in UCLA, and he should have been fired a few weeks or months ago.
“I have no earthly notion why they kept him. He was right on the bubble. He performed an adequate job, but I recall Chip Kelly
from 13, 14 years ago, when he was one of the two or three top coaches in college football, competing for national championships.”
Finebaum believes Kelly’s departure from a Big Ten head coaching position to become the offensive coordinator at another Big
Ten school reflects the current status of UCLA’s program. Finebaum believes UCLA is the “little brother to USC” as the two go from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten.
He also highlighted UCLA’s challenge to compete for fans with USC, the Lakers, and the Dodgers.
“I think it’s a really challenging job,” Finebaum added. “… That’s a tough town. This morning, I read a piece titled, “Is Jim
Harbaugh a big enough name for L.A.” That’s the type of location it is. When you win a national championship in college football
and are looking for recognition, I would be very cautious as a sitting head coach or someone with a bright future to take that job, because it is a dead-end job in my opinion.”
