Mark Clattenburg has delivered his verdict on whether or not Nottingham Forest should have been awarded a penalty against Newcastle.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the man officiated the Champions League final in the past.
What has Newcastle fan Clattenburg stated regarding the Forest incident, then? Let’s investigate more closely.
Mark Clattenburg explains whether Nottingham Forest should have had a penalty on Saturday
It seems that Clattenburg, who is a Newcastle supporter, is equally irritated by the ongoing contradictions!
Despite the custodian making very little contact, Martin Dubravka was found to have fouled Diogo Jota, earning Liverpool a penalty last month against Newcastle.
Taiwo Awoniyi was fouled significantly more often on Saturday than Jota was, yet Anthony Taylor, the same referee, did not change his mind.
According to Clattenburg, Forest has every right to be vindictive.
He stated to the Daily Mail: “Just last month, at Anfield, Liverpool were given a penalty after Diogo Jota was deemed to have been tripped by Martin Dubravka of Newcastle.”
“Soft though it was, the decision was awarded in real-time. The referee that day? Anthony Taylor, who did not award Nottingham Forest a penalty when Taiwo Awoniyi was tripped by the same goalkeeper.
“VAR Tony Harrington cannot escape blame as he did not take the chance to let his colleague correct his error. It is no wonder Forest fans are asking why it is one rule for them Premier League’s biggest clubs and another for them.”
Sickening decision costs Forest dearly
It’s encouraging to see Clattenburg publicly support the idea that the supposedly larger teams receive more favourable rulings.
Why didn’t Taylor indicate to the location when Awoniyi went down over the weekend if he was going to call a foul on Jota for slight contact?
We find it understandable that some fans are losing interest in the Premier League level of play because of the inconsistent performance.
It’s encouraging to hear Clattenburg support Taylor and Harrington’s choice, and maybe Forest will soon receive the go-ahead.
