Newcastle United bagged a much-needed away victory on Saturday as they overcame a spirited Nottingham Forest side to win 3-2 at the City Ground.

Fabian Schar’s goal was the highlight of two outstanding goals by Bruno Guimaraes, who had a fantastic game for the Magpies.

Bruno said after the game that he wasn’t sure he would play because he had been sick all week. He seemed to have cleared his system of whatever it was, for he had returned to the Bruno that we had been admiring for the past two years.

As part of a practiced set-piece routine, Guimaraes opened the score by volleying home a deep cross from Kieran Trippier. But, because this was Bruno, it wasn’t just any volley—he nudged the ball home with the outside of his boot. Though he made it appear easy, it was anything but.

He pounced on a quick pass out of the back by Forest to score his second goal, which gave the Magpies the victory. Bruno saw the mistake and reacted quickly, moving it to the desired spot with a touch before firing a quick shot from about 20 yards that fizzled into the bottom corner.

Speaking on the latest The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer was practically swooning while talking about Guimaraes’ performance. (Newcastle talk starts around 25 minutes in).

Alan Shearer was very impressed with Guimaraes’ first goal for Newcastle on Saturday

“With his two goals, Bruno Guimaraes impressed me greatly. Did he not play a somewhat more forward role, one that was more advanced?

However, how did he finish? You know, from Trippier’s ball in from the set piece? The volley, for example, was one of the hardest things to do because of where the ball is at, and his use of his right foot to finish with such an unbelievable finish was both really difficult and brilliant. Superb victory for the Toon.”

It seems like a while since we were moved to such an extent by Bruno in a way that wasn’t related to a narrative about him leaving the club.

He will have a huge confidence boost from that performance, so we anticipate seeing more iconic Guimaraes in the future.
