Why Seahawks Are Affected After Bill O’Brien Leaves Ohio State for Boston College
Following Bill O’Brien’s announcement on Friday that he will take over as head coach of Boston College, the college football world is trembling. O’Brien consented to join Ohio State in the same role under head coach Ryan Day after serving as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots in 2023. But BC gave him a better job offer, and the Buckeyes are in need of an offensive coordinator right now. One of the candidates for O’Brien’s replacement in Columbus is Chip Kelly, a finalist for the offensive coordinator job with the Seattle Seahawks.
The 60-year-old Kelly coached the 49ers in 2016 and the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2015, but he was more successful in college at UCLA (2018–23) and Oregon (2009–12). Kelly, though, has expressed interest in rejoining the NFL. On Tuesday, he had an interview to join Mike Macdonald’s staff with the Seattle Seahawks.
Kelly is still the head coach at UCLA, thus it seems doubtful that he would depart to take a lower position with a league competitor (UCLA is joining the Big Ten in 2024). But Kelly’s best chance to win a National Championship since his Oregon days is at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes might intervene and offer Kelly the position O’Brien accepted, upsetting the Seahawks’ plans. This is more evidence that the coaching carousel can occasionally get a little disorienting and that football is one enormous web of links.
