Frimpong’s continued success will only increase Celtic’s prospects of a successful fee-based sell, but will the manager notice?

In the excellent Bayer Leverkusen team led by Xavi Alonso, Jeremie Frimpong keeps getting better. This season, the German team has not lost in any tournament. Last night, they easily defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 to increase their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to five points.

One of Alonso’s most important players is the former Celtic wing-back, and he proved it last night by capping off an outstanding performance with a fantastic goal to put the finishing touches on a fantastic team effort.

As everyone is aware, when Celtic traded the full back to Leverkusen in 2021, a sell-on clause was added to his contract. It is reportedly equivalent to the 30% clause Manchester City added to their agreement to sell Frimpong to Celtic—that is, 30% of any profit made on the £11 million the young Dutchman was sold for.Given that he reportedly has a buyout clause worth at least £40 million, it will be quite a cut.

That comes to about £9 million, which is a significant amount by any measure. Anyone can see that it’s smart business, and it will only help the club’s finances grow even more. The crucial query is whether the Celtic manager will use any of it to bolster his roster in the summer and make the “quality” additions that both he and the fans so much want.

That is, of course, assuming he is still in control. Regardless of who is in charge, they need to get the money required to bolster the team and add talent. We need a change of direction upstairs, as evidenced by the fact that we are even considering it.

For the sake of argument, let’s pretend for a moment that Brendan Rodgers wins the Scottish Premiership this season. However, as we all know, there is now a tie in the standings.Then, it stands to reason that Matt O’Riley will be sold this summer for at least the same price that Jota was last year. When you combine the two, we arrive at £50 million; before any more players are sold and the anticipated Frimpong windfall is included, we go close to £60 million. There might be one or two more on top, and maybe Liel Abada will wish to relocate.

The team already has £70 million in the bank, and the Champions League money is sure to follow.

Even with a large investment, the squad would not have been close to being competitive in the Champions League at that point. We would be in a far worse situation than we were in the previous season, even though we were not good enough, and we were worse this season even though we received more points.

The team gets worse as the bank balance improves. In the January window, Brendan Rodgers requested four quality additions, but they were never brought in. We can reduce that to a minimum of five if O’Riley is sold. All of this might be academic in any case because the Rangers, the new bookmakers’ favorite, are expected to be winning the league before we play in it again and may even be the team getting ready for the Champions League in May. They face Ross County this week.

Hopefully, Brendan can keep his preseason vow to win the league and that won’t come to pass. If he does, he will require support, therefore perhaps as a group we should find out what our CEO Michael Nicolson—who rarely speaks to the support—has to say about the club’s intentions to invest in the squad before we all sign up for the upcoming season.
