Scott Brown in Rangers fans dig as Ayr boss offers explanation for quiet Ibrox reaction.

The Celtic legend believed he didn’t get as nasty a welcome as he had expected.

Scott Brown believes Rangers fans did not react well to him yesterday because they were afraid he would get the better of them.

The Celtic icon was expecting a nasty reception when he led his Ayr United side to Ibrox for a Scottish Cup match yesterday, and while there was some of that, it was not as bad as he had anticipated. Gers finally triumphed 2-0, but the 38-year-old couldn’t resist taking a shot at the crowd afterward.

Brown had a remarkable success as Celtics captain, winning championships and Trebles galore, which obviously entailed consistently outperforming their opponents. That includes on their own turf, with a 5-1 victory standing out, and he believes that was on their minds and contributed to the tepid reaction.

He commented after the game: “I was expecting a little more. To be fair, they were a little concerned because I had won so much here. Do you understand what I mean?
Brown and Gers manager Philippe Clement had some back-and-forth in the build-up to the game, with the Belgian claiming his opposite number dislikes Rangers and Brown joking that he has “a lot of love” for them.

But they were supposed to have a drink and a debrief after the game.

Brown quipped, “He offered me a drink, and I’m a Fifer, so I’ll never turn it down.” “I hope it’s a nice red wine!”
