Philippe Clement held crunch meetings with Rangers board after ‘atrocious’ event at Ibrox.
That is according to writer Gary Keown, who shared the ruling after the Gers requested that Willie Collum not judge their matches after they believed a decision against Celtic did not go their way last December.
In that 2-1 defeat, the official was the VAR, and Rangers were furious that he did not request that referee Nick Walsh check a potential Alistair Johnston handball.
Collum refereed the Ibrox side’s 2-0 victory over Ayr United in the Scottish Cup fifth round on Saturday (10 February).
“He was happy Collum was in charge for the visit of Ayr,” Keown wrote for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (page 96, 11 February). “He’d spoken to the board about the atrocious handling of the Old Firm fallout that they hadn’t consulted him over.”
Rangers manager pleased with Collum
The Rangers board can have few complaints about Clement, who has done an excellent job since taking over for Michael Beale earlier this season.
He has helped them catch up with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and led them to League Cup victory.
Furthermore, the manager has led the Gers to the Europa League knockout stages and, most recently, the Scottish Cup final stages.
However, the Glasgow club’s leadership may be dissatisfied with Clement’s statement that he is fine with Collum refereeing their games [Sky Sports, 9 February], which contradicts the club’s position.
Clement has clearly moved on from the decision against Celtic, when it emerged that a penalty was not given due to Abdallah Sima being offside in the build-up. The board now need to put the past behind them as well.
