Connor Goldson came under fire for the “awful” incident.

Rangers defender Connor Goldson came under fire from BBC Sportscene analyst Kenny Miller for his “awful” lunge on an Ayr United player during their 2-0 Scottish Cup victory on Saturday, February 10.

After a thrilling match at Ibrox between the Light Blues and the Scottish Championship team, Borna Barisic’s early goal and Fabio Silva’s late goal sealed the Light Blues’ trip to the Scottish Cup quarterfinals.

But after Goldson failed to control the ball and made a “reckless” lunge at an Ayr player, the victory was tainted by controversy.

The away team was on the counter when referee Willie Collum, who has recently been embroiled in disputes with the Rangers, permitted play to continue, but VAR did not review the incident.

And Miller criticized Goldson for his “awful” and “reckless” move in a speech that aired on BBC Sportscene on February 10 at 14:11 seconds.

Miller stated: “You see, when you slow it down like that, it looks awful doesn’t it John? He overruns it here, and there’s a lunge, no doubt about it, and there’s definite contact there.”

However, when viewed at maximum velocity, his leg does not pass through him. He might be lucky, but I also consider the player’s response—he remains awake and lets Anton Dowds play Souttar in a one-on-one match.

“I just think it does help Goldson because that was pretty reckless,” the speaker said, adding that he is not down, is not writhing in agony, and is not forcing Collum to make a decision.

Goldson needs to stop playing with such reckless abandon.

Even while viewing the video at a standard speed, Goldson made a horrible lunge. Seeing gamers accept challenges like that when they know they will harm someone is abhorrent.

The senior Rangers player’s decision to lunge at his opponent in that manner cannot be justified because, had he connected fully, it may have caused significant damage to his opponent.

Miller is correct; the player’s refusal to give up or writhe in agony in the face of the challenge undoubtedly helped Goldson and allowed Collum to go on, but the Light Blues player is extremely fortunate.

Goldson has been an incredible asset to Rangers under Philippe Clement, but he still struggles with calmness and poise when things don’t go his way or he mishandles the ball, like he did in the Ayr incident.

It remains to be seen if Clement will have spoken to him about such challenges, which have the potential to not only land him in trouble but also that of his fellow Light Blues players.

But if Goldson is to continue to be a vital member of the Gers defense after this season, he has to make significant progress in this area.
