Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk fined $5,000 for spearing Max Pacioretty in the Paciorettys.
NHL Player Safety fined the blueliner $5,000, the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement, for spearing Capitals winger Max Pacioretty in the gonads.
The play in question came with 1:47 remaining in the first period on Saturday, as Grzelcyk and Pacioretty competed for position
in front of Boston’s net. Grzelcyk received a severe penalty for spearing the nether regions and was removed from the game.
The action appeared to be in response to a hit by Pacioretty earlier in the game.
After the sharp jab from the blade of Grzelcyk’s stick, Pacioretty instantly was writhing around on the ice in pain before officials
sounded their whistles. Patches was taken off the ice by John Carlson and chief sports trainer Jason Serbus, who led him straight to the locker room.
Pacioretty returned to the game and provided the main assist on TJ Oshie’s power-play goal at 1:05 of the second period.
The veteran forward played 13:54 of ice time in the 3-0 victory and received an additional $500,000 in performance incentives for appearing in his 15th game this season.
Grzelcyk had never been fined or suspended in his professional career prior to this occurrence.
