Rangers: Connor Goldson slammed for ‘awful’ incident as footage shown on BBC Sportscene
Kenny Miller, a BBC Sportscene pundit, condemned Rangers defender Connor Goldson for his “awful” lunge on an Ayr United player during their 2-0 Scottish Cup win on Saturday (10 February).
The Light Blues advanced to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals thanks to Borna Barisic’s early opener and Fabio Silva’s late goal in a thrilling match at Ibrox against the Scottish Championship side.
However, the victory was marred by controversy when Goldson launched a “reckless” lunge at an Ayr player after he failed to control the ball.
Referee Willie Collum, who has been engaged in recent problems with Rangers, permitted the away side to continue on the counter-attack, but VAR did not verify the incident.
Miller, speaking on BBC Sportscene (10 February, 14mins:11sec), criticized Goldson’s “reckless” and “awful” play.
Miller went on to say: “You know, he overruns it here and there’s a lunge, no doubt about it and there’s definite contact there and you see when you slow it down like that, it looks awful doesn’t it John?”
“But, when you see it at full speed, his leg does not pass through him.”
I believe he may be fortunate, but I also consider the player’s reaction; he stays up and then releases Anton Dowds to face Souttar one-on-one.
“So the fact that he’s not gone down and not writhing in pain and agony and not making Collum make a decision,
I just think it does help Goldson because that was pretty reckless.”
Goldson needs to cut out the recklessness in his game
Even at regular speed, Goldson’s lunge was horrible. It’s horrible to see players take on challenges like that knowing they’ll hurt someone.
There is no justification for the senior Rangers player’s decision to lunge, as it could have been quite destructive to his opponent if he had fully connected.
Miller is correct; the fact that the player did not collapse or writhe in agony as a result of the challenge undoubtedly
benefited Goldson and allowed Collum to continue, but the Light Blues player is extremely fortunate.
Goldson has been fantastic at the heart of the Rangers defence under Philippe Clement, but he still lacks
calmness and serenity when things don’t go his way or he miscontrols the ball, like in the Ayr incident.
It’s problems like these that can get him in hot water as well as his Light Blues teammates, and whether Clement has spoken to him about it remains to be seen.
Goldson must improve in this area to continue playing a crucial role in the Gers defense beyond the current season.
