Unbelievable’ – BBC Sportsound pundit cannot believe what he saw in Rangers win v Ayr

Stevenson: Ayr United moment v Rangers is ‘Unbelievable’ at Ibrox

Robbie Mutch, the Ayr United goalkeeper, blew Ryan Stevenson away with a fantastic save against Rangers on Saturday, February 10.

The Honest Men’s goalkeeper was always going to have a rough time against the Gers, who won 2-0 on a difficult evening at Ibrox.

Up against Fabio Silva, Oscar Cortes, and Scott Wright in attack, the visitors at Ibrox did well to make it to halftime with only one goal conceded, and Mutch deserves credit for that.

Speaking via BBC Sportsound on Saturday (10 February, 6:18pm), the former United midfielder said: “What a save, unbelievable. It comes at him at some pace.”

Rangers punish Ayr United at Ibrox

With only two shots on goal in the first half, Clement would have been highly unhappy with his team’s performance and had expected more. Cup competitions, similar to the FA Cup, allow tiny teams like Ayr United to discover fame and achieve the unattainable.

However, a far more assured and confident second half allowed Rangers to win the victory with few worries from the visitors.

Cortes and Mohamed Diomande, both new Rangers players, struggled to adjust to their first starts, but the former was a standout performer.

Of course, playing a Championship side like Ayr United will be tricky, as they are likely to sit back in their own half and attack Rangers on the counter. But that is no excuse for a Europa League squad to do poorly in the Scottish Cup.

Fabio Silva’s performance in the first 45 minutes lacked quality. The Wolves loanee will have been considerably pleased in the second half, when he scored with 15 minutes remaining, his second goal in his previous three outings.

There will have been a lot of negatives that Clement could point out. A win, though, will have been the most important part of the match as the Gers will have wanted to continue their fine form after taking the top spot in the league for a brief moment.
