Rangers made a mistake on £1.5m sale who is now worth £7.5m
During the January transfer window, Glasgow Rangers acquired a number of noteworthy players, including Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, and striker Fabio Silva. Since all three are under 22, adding this kind of youth to the starting lineup might be very beneficial for Philippe Clement as he pursues Celtic in the Premiership. Ideally, this marks the start of Rangers with the transfer market’s positive relationship. The last few years haven’t been ideal, with money being squandered on a wide range of players.
Rangers’ recent transfer record
The Light Blues, led by Michael Beale, made significant summer acquisitions of Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, and Danilo in the hopes that they would propel the team to success. After seven months, Lammers is now on loan at Utrecht, Danilo is sidelined due to injury, and Dessers has only scored 12 goals since arriving.
Not only does Beale occasionally make poor moves, but his predecessor Giovanni van Bronckhorst also made a few blunders. The Dutchman undersold a few players even though he managed the sales of Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, and Nathan Patterson, who all saw good returns. Cedric Itten is a prime illustration. Van Bronckhorst was trying to raise money, therefore he left for a comparatively tiny transfer price, but in the last eighteen months, Itten’s value has increased dramatically.
How much Rangers signed Cedric Itten for
Steven Gerrard spent that summer strengthening his team in preparation for mounting a legitimate title bid to win the 55th league title in the club’s history and keep Celtic from winning 10 titles in a row, following the Covid-19-interrupted 2019–20 campaign.
Before the season began, the likes of Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe, and Bassey joined the Gers, but it was Itten’s arrival that seemed to get fans enthusiastic about what lay ahead. The Swiss international cost over £3 million to sign, and it seemed like a wise choice given that he had scored 19 goals in just 34 games for FC St. Gallen the previous season.
Cedric Itten’s Rangers statistics
It was always going to be difficult for the striker to replace Alfredo Morelos in the starting lineup, but even though Itten only started nine of the 37 games in which he appeared for the Light Blues, he still managed to rack up six goals and three assists. The center-forward was sent on loan to German team Greuther Furth, where he scored goals against Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, but this wasn’t enough to keep him in the starting lineup for the start of the 2021–2022 season. Van Bronckhorst brought him back in January 2022.
