Philippe Clement press conference Rangers v Ayr United

Philippe, how did you view that one today?

“The team performed a good job. We opened the game nicely, with a solid tempo and actions. After three minutes, we could have scored two goals, but football also requires a little luck. That was not on our side today in terms of finishing, and all credit goes to our opponents for doing their utmost to stop the goals, including saves on the goal line in the second half. It was a game in which we had control for 90 minutes.

The team went ahead to score goals, and we didn’t give away much. I believe in one shot on target, therefore keeping a clean sheet is equally vital. And we could offer minutes to people who are just in the building, as well as players who have returned from injury, to help them get back into rhythm and to rest a few players. So it’s a good evening.

Another wonderful aspect of the evening was the opportunity to play that type of game in front of so many supporters. So the only thing I would have wanted to do today was give the fans more goals. If I was looking for perfection, it would have been much better, but we tried.”

First starts for Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande; what did you make of their performances?

“Oscar played in a more familiar position. Dio performed a little better tonight because of the circumstances, as well as the relationship we’re developing with Tom Lawrence and his minutes. Todd (Cantwell) had a knock over the weekend, so we wanted to keep an eye on that as well.

They demonstrated good qualities. They demonstrated that they are good players, technical players, and they have only been with us for two weeks, but you can already tell that they have a solid relationship with the team and understand what we want to do. Of course, it’s not ideal yet and needs to become more natural, but that’s expected after two weeks.”
