Gareth Southgate could turn to Jack Butland amid England goalkeeper dilemma with in-form Rangers stopper potentially in line for a first call-up in SIX YEARS

Gareth Southgate, England’s manager, may return to Jack Butland as he faces a goalkeeper conundrum.

Southgate has limited backup alternatives for England’s number one goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford of Everton, as Euro 2024 approaches.

Aaron Ramsdale has been a bench player for Arsenal since Michael Arteta brought in David Raya last summer. He has only appeared in 10 games this season.

Newcastle United’s Nick Pope, 31, will be out until at least the end of March after dislocating his shoulder against Manchester United in early December.

Sam Johnstone, 30, has been benched at Crystal Palace due to a calf injury. Dean Henderson, 26, is his replacement and hopes to impress.

Butland, a 30-year-old Rangers goalkeeper who last played for England in 2018, could be recalled for the upcoming March friendly against Brazil and Belgium.

‘It is an issue for us, and the position is uncertain,’ Southgate stated.

‘We need to make sure we’re watching everyone. Jack is featured since he plays for a prominent team and has experience as a goalie.

‘It’s not an ideal situation with Aaron not playing, Sam at the moment not playing and Nick injured.

‘We’ll have to see how that plays out.’

Butland, who has nine England caps, has impressed at Ibrox since moving there after his Palace contract expired at the end of last season.

The former Stoke City goalkeeper has 19 clean sheets in 38 Rangers appearances this season.

England has only four friendlies before the Euros in Germany, with matches against Brazil on March 23 and Belgium on March 26 at Wembley.

They then face Bosnia and Herzegovina at Newcastle’s St James’ Park on June 3 and Iceland at Wembley Stadium on June 7, before beginning their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16.

The Football Association wants Southgate to extend his contract, which expires in December, until the 2026 World Cup.
