UCLA Bruins have 96-hour timeline to find Chip Kelly replacement
Chip Kelly is headed to Columbus to become the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator. Who will succeed him in Westwood?
Chip Kelly has left his position as head coach of the UCLA football program after six seasons. To be honest, Kelly’s stay in
Westwood was bound to end soon. The writing was on the wall and in the sky. Chip Kelly considered returning to the NFL as an
offensive coordinator with the Raiders and Seahawks. However, there were also reports of dissatisfaction among UCLA alumni with Kelly’s leadership.
UCLA’s search for a new head coach comes at an inconvenient time, as Chip Kelly leaves to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.
According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, “athletic director Martin Jarmond told the team it would have a new coach within 96
hours,” Feldman took to Twitter shortly after the report was published to provide extra background, specifically about Jarmond
and the UCLA Bruins’ target candidate for Westwood.
“A person of integrity. We do not cut corners here. I want someone that is passionate and energetic. I am looking for an instructor and a developer. I want someone who is hungry. “I want someone who wants to be a Bruin.”
In his story on The Athletic, Feldman named seven potential candidates: former Stanford head coach David Shaw, current
Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck, Raiders running back coach and former Bruins running back coach Deshaun Foster, UCLA
defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe, Ohio State running back coach Tony Alford, Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White,
and USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn, who worked on the UCLA staff last year.
