Mega Celtic cash windfall from UEFA deals Rangers reality check but Philippe Clement holds 2 paths to top jackpot

Celtic defeated Rangers to take first place in the UEFA payment payouts to Scottish Premiership teams for the previous year.

And with Celtic expected to top the UEFA windfall table once more this season—even if they win the Europa League—Philippe Clement will understand that he needs to win the title this season in order to collect a similar reward the following season. UEFA has disclosed that Celtic earned more than £26 million from their 2022–23 Champions League exploits, even though they were the bottom team in their group playing against the best teams in Europe, Real Madrid, RB Leipzig, and Shakhtar Donetsk, all coached by Ange Postecoglou.

This payment consists of TV rights, prize money, UEFA coefficient payout, and participation fee. Rangers had to play against Liverpool, Ajax, and Napoli in order to finish last in an abysmal season that saw the team post the poorest group stage record in history. Despite the outcome, the Ibrox coffers had a welcome lift when £18.29 million came in.

And Celtic, led by Brendan Rodgers, will continue to lead the UEFA pay roll for this European season. Despite being in the group stage, which cost the club over £31 million, they were unable to advance out of a group that contained Lazio, Feyenoord, and Atletico Madrid.

However, while they wait to learn who their opponent is in the Europa League’s round of 16, Rangers can keep adding to their UEFA prize fund. The team received a £4.2 million parachute payment after losing to PSV in the Champions League play-offs. Before the draw later this month, they will have made just over £17 million in total from their nearly £13 million in earnings thus far in the Europa League.

Even if Rangers win everything, they will not be able to surpass Celtic’s total this season. Gaining straight entry into the group stage and winning the competition would enable the team to receive a £26.4 million reward, underscoring the significance of the Scottish Premiership title fight.

But if Clement’s team wins in Dublin, they will automatically qualify for the group stage, matching Celtic’s total for the next season—that is, if the Hoops win the championship. Currently, winning the league is the best way to get into Europe’s elite table; the winning team will receive first place in the 2024–2025 allocations.
