John Calipari reiterates belief in Justin Edwards

Despite being rated as a five-star forward in the class of 2023, Justin Edwards hasn’t exactly performed like the third-best recruit in the group. For the most part of his first campaign, Edwards has battled.

In addition to struggling with injuries, Edwards hasn’t always lived up to expectations, particularly considering the pool of skilled players waiting to step in if head coach John Calipari decides to look elsewhere.

Edwards is scoring 8.1 points a night on average while making 44.6% of his field goals. Nevertheless, he continues to consistently show off his effort, perseverance, and potential, especially in the wake of what may have been his greatest performance of the year—a 17-point performance in a 32-point victory over Vanderbilt—on the road.
Calipari has always expressed his optimism in the young forward from Philadelphia, knowing that the best is still to come. Regarding Edwards, he stated the following on this week’s radio show:

It’s okay that Edwards isn’t there yet. I expressed my belief in him. I am aware of his excellence.

Cal kept talking about Edwards, mentioning his recent impressive performance versus Vandy.

“Suddenly, there he is (at Vanderbilt). He was playing with such ease. He was producing and had a lot of assists. If you don’t have a chance, how about Give it to a teammate; this is an absurd concept. Your colleague can also play on this team if you pass it to him. You are going to receive the help at the end.

But that wasn’t all. Calipari closed it on a sobering note. He said that Edwards has persevered and maintained his self-belief, for which he is “so proud” of him.

Though things might be difficult right now, Edwards has the potential to become one of the greatest players in the world at some point in the future.
