While Dujon Sterling awaits a suspension call, the Rangers appeal the decision.
While there has been some dubious officiating in the most recent round of Scottish Premiership
matches, Rangers ought to have held off on appealing Dujon Sterling’s red card.
Even after being questioned by the VAR officials, whistleblower Don Robertson maintained that he had
made the correct decision even though he was unable to remove the card quickly enough.
And this is why Rangers have made a mistake in requesting an appeal to avoid Dujon Sterling having to
sit in the stands.
Rangers’ appeal for Dujon Sterling shows that they have made the incorrect decision.
According to the International Football Association Board regulations, the following constitutes
significant foul play that is grounds for a red card:
“A tackle or challenge that involves excessive force or cruelty, puts the opponent’s safety in jeopardy, or
both shall be called as significant foul play.
“Serious foul play is committed by any player who recklessly endangers the safety of an opponent by
lunging at them when challenging for the ball from the front, side, or back using one or both legs.”
When Robertson flashed the red, he probably had two things in mind: was the opponent in danger, was
the former Chelsea academy product in control, and was excessive force being used?
