Dallas had a 13-year championship drought following their 1973 2-3 record in the game. From 1979 until 1991, the Cowboys did not compete for the championship.

They would compete in three consecutive NFC Conference title games between 1980 and 1982, losing each time. Over the course of those thirteen seasons, they would finish 6-7 in the playoffs.

Following their 31-14 defeat by the Redskins in the 1982 conference championship game, Dallas would go on to lose their two Divisional Round games in 1985 and 1991.

However, that was all before 1992.

The Cowboys won the NFC East and the No. 2 seed in the playoffs that season after storming to a 13-3 record.
In the Divisional round, the Cowboys thrashed the Eagles 34–10. After that, Dallas defeated the 49ers in the NFC championship game in San Francisco, 30–20.

After a losing decade, they were back in the Super Bowl, and the 14-5 Buffalo Bills were the only team standing in their way of a third Lombardi trophy.

The game took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on January 31, 1993. the same arena that UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman, now of Dallas, had called home.
