How will the new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, look for the Saints?
Throughout the 2023 season, the Saints offense was inconsistent and struggled. Playcalling lacked originality and was boring and predictable. Kubiak comes from an entirely different system—one that is offensive. The Saints made it a goal to get a coach with ties to the Shannah-McVay family because 49ers head coach Kyle Shannahan is considered one of the best and most inventive play-callers in the league.
The Saints offense only used motion on 366 plays in 2023. With 753, San Francisco’s offense more than doubles that.
The Saints’ offense was so predictable because of Pete Carmichael’s lack of mobility and inventiveness that Taysom Hill’s QB abilities were the finest play calls of the season.
Alvin Kamara
Running back Christian McCaffery, who plays the same position as Alvin Kamara, is one of the 49ers offense’s key X Factors. Since the Saints and former head coach Sean Payton parted ways, Kamara’s output has decreased, and his worst season as a professional was in 2023.
We should take a close look at the 49ers’ desperate need for another game-winning play.
The date is January 14, 2012. We are in San Francisco at Candlestick Park. The 49ers need a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining, down three, and facing a third down to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs without having to go to OT. Meanwhile, the Saints can conclude this with a learning and
The Saints’ lack of creativity on offense made Kamara’s presence in the game less threatening and he was used as more of a safety outlet than as a playmaker. San Francisco’s offense utilizes McCaffery’s talents to the tee. In 2023, McCaffery had one of his most productive seasons since entering the league. With part of San Francisco’s offensive play designs making its way into New Orleans, Kamara could finally utilize his strengths in his play and possibly get back to his pro-bowl caliber play.
Receiver Core
The Saints have a pair of young up-and-coming wide receivers in Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Olave and Shaheed both produced in 2023, but not to the extent many fans were expecting. Kubiak worked with a pair of talented wideouts in San Francisco in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Samuel sees a very creative role in the 49ers’ offense often being used as a gadget player that lines up in multiple positions on the field. Brandon Aiyuk is coming off his best season as a pro under Kubiak.
The 49ers offense also utilizes tight ends. George Kittle has been one of the best tight ends in the league for years now and has pulled in over 600 yards receiving since his sophomore year in the league. Saints quarterback Derek Carr used tight ends a lot in his time with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Saints have a trio of talented tight ends but shied away from targeting their big pass catchers in 2023. With the talent New Orleans has at tight end and Carr’s previous connection with the position, the Saints offense could put them to use in 2024.
The Zone of Red
For much of the season, red zone scoring was the Saints’ main weakness. Despite a slight uptick in red zone scoring toward the conclusion of the season, New Orleans (#18) still finished in the lower half of the league. At 68.5%, San Francisco had the highest scoring percentage at the end.
Red zone scoring has always been a problem for Derek Carr, and this problem persisted after he moved to New Orleans. The Saints frequently deployed the “wrong” players in the red zone, and the playcalls were never certain. With Kubiak joining the team, there should be a significant improvement in the group’s inability to score inside the 20.
