Ferguson moots summer exit for Rangers 25y/o because of ‘Excellent’ teammate
As he approaches the age at which he needs to be playing consistently, Robby McCrorie may look to leave Rangers in the summer, according to Derek Ferguson. The 25-year-old may have thought he would take the No. 1 spot at Ibrox when Allan McGregor announced his retirement at the end of the previous campaign, but Jack Butland, an England international who has been a huge hit with fans thanks to a string of excellent performances, arrived as part of a hiring spree spearheaded by former manager Michael Beale.
With the rapport McCrorie has developed with the fervent Gers fan base, it doesn’t seem likely that Butland, 30, will be moved anytime soon.
Ferguson believes there may be a decision to be made about him by all parties at the conclusion of the season, however Philippe Clement provided an explanation for his refusal to permit him to leave the team on loan during the January transfer window.
“I think right now it’s not a criticism of McCrorie because he is a good goalkeeper, a top goalkeeper,” he said in an interview with Ibrox News. “But we need to see that with McCrorie over the course of a season.”
Although he has had a few loan stints, he is still a competent goalkeeper for Rangers and is a member of the Scotland team, in my opinion. However, he is not quite as excellent as Jack Butland.
Although he is a capable goalie, he is now more of a backup who could exert some pressure on Butland, who is an outstanding goalie.
Could McCrorie hold the top spot? Indeed, he has the potential to play; you cannot play second fiddle your entire career. He is getting a little old.
He is a competent goalie, but like everyone else, you should see them play the entire season before making any firm judgments.
Would the Rangers allow Robby McCrorie to go?
Goalies are a whole different species than players in any other position on the field. With the sticks set up so simply, just one player may participate.
The issue McCrorie faces is that in the Rangers’ hierarchy, he is positioned behind an exceptional goalkeeper. While Beale made many mistakes during the summer, one of his better decisions was bringing in Butland. The former Manchester United goalkeeper, who has shown true leadership both on the field and in the locker room, has been a vital component of Rangers’ championship push.
It does seem to suggest one course of action for McCrorie, and that is that leaving in the summer will probably be the wisest choice for him at this point in his career
