Former First-Overall Pick Teases New Team In Free Agency.
Jameis Winston, the New Orleans Saints quarterback, recently appeared on a podcast and discussed his potential free agency destinations.
Free agency is just around the corner, and Saints quarterback Jameis Winston has a good chance of finding a new team. New Orleans is stuck with Derek Carr for at least one more season, and Winston may be in head coach Dennis Allen’s doghouse following a contentious final touchdown to end the season.
The former first-round pick may not be the next Peyton Manning, but he is talented enough to start in the right scheme. With a shortage of starting-caliber quarterbacks, Jameis Winston has a good chance of landing a starting job in free agency. Winston is aware of this potential and recently discussed his future on the Pardon My Take podcast.
Jameis Winston: Joining Falcons In Free Agency Would Be “Beautiful”
While appearing on the show, Winston was asked to name his preference for five different cities: Seattle, Atlanta, Washington, Foxboro, and Denver. Coincidentally, each one of these teams happens to have an NFL franchise that could sign a quarterback like Jameis Winston in free agency.
Winston soon recognized the connection and indicated his desired landing site.
“I grew up an hour and a half from Atlanta,” Winston explained. “I am from Birmingham, Alabama. That would be a wonderful time for just my family. That would be gorgeous. But I feel like I am the attraction. I am the thing, the city, and I will bring joy, love, trust, serenity, and integrity to whatever location where I am. Because I’m a man of growth. Wherever it is, that city will have someone ready. “A kingdom man who is willing to help others grow.”
It’s simple to understand why Winston would want to join the Falcons. While Washington and (maybe) New England have the opportunity to draft a franchise quarterback, Atlanta presently holds the eighth overall pick in the draft. Unless they trade up, they won’t acquire a top quarterback prospect. Jameis Winston would most likely start in the immediate term if he signed here in free agency, which is all any quarterback wants.
In addition to the familiarity indicated earlier, Atlanta offers a beneficial position. Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson are all excellent players, and the offensive line is among the best in the league.
The Wild Card here is Seattle. The Seahawks could easily move on from Geno Smith’s contract, but is signing Jameis Winston an upgrade? Seattle will probably be in the market for a new quarterback, but they’d probably want more than just a bridge quarterback.
Other Possible Fits
The most notable exclusion is the Minnesota Vikings. Given Kirk Cousins’ impending free agency, the Vikings may need to consider Jameis Winston as a replacement. The Vikings have a playoff-caliber team, and Winston should do well slinging bombs to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Of course, Jameis Winston may not be able to land a starting job in free agency. While the Florida State graduate makes enough of great plays, he also puts the ball in too many dangerous situations. In addition to Cousins, Justin Fields, Ryan Tannehill, Jacoby Brissett, and Gardner Minshew will be available, and Winston may lose his starting spot.
In this situation, he would most likely sign as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens or Los Angeles Chargers. Tyler Huntley is ready to become a free agent, and the team has gone 3-6 since he took over for Lamar Jackson. Given Jackson’s injury history and playing style, the organization may want to bring in a better backup. The Chargers, however, struggled without Justin Herbert, and Winston would be a significant upgrade over Easton Stick.
