Tony Bellew explodes at Premier League live on talkSPORT amid Everton verdict.
In a brand new ruling on the Everton Profit and Sustainability Rules appeal, Tony Bellew burst in a rant live on talkSPORT, calling the Premier League a “absolute disgrace”.
The former world champion boxer, who is a huge Everton fan, questioned how the team could have been docked more points for a single rule violation than other clubs for going bankrupt.
He also said that the Premier League is exclusively focused on the major six clubs, and because Everton is not one of them, they do not receive the same treatment as Manchester City and Chelsea.
“Can I just get this off my chest,” Bellew said live on talkSPORT.[7 February, 9:41] “How can you have nine points deducted when you go into administration but ten points for the charge? It simply doesn’t make sense.
“Your club has absolutely failed in every element when it goes into administration; you receive nine points, we’ve overspent by a few pounds, and we get ten points.
“City has spent almost six billion pounds, along with Chelsea, and these guys are laughing all the way to the bank. Once again, the establishment exclusively seeks to punish Scousers, which is an absolute disgrace. The Premier League need investigation.
“They are keeping the affluent rich and the poor impoverished; the Premier League is designed for six teams, as we are becoming increasingly aware, and Everton is no longer one of those six clubs. It’s a complete embarrassment.
Bellew is right about Everton – to an extent
Bellew is correct in that it appears absurd to punish the club more for a single violation of the regulations than any club that goes bankrupt due to severe mismanagement and failing to keep the club alive.
He must understand, however, that there is a distinction between the current cases. Chelsea and Manchester City are both now under investigation, and because their cases are more complex than Everton’s, their punishments will take longer to be delivered than in their case.
An update on the appeal procedure is scheduled to be heard in the middle of February, with the hearing already completed, and the expectation is that the punishment will be lowered because it was excessive to begin with.
If City, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest are found guilty of breaches, their punishments must be similar to Everton’s. If that’s not the case, now is the time to make this point.
