Raheem Morris of the Falcons Describes Hiring Jimmy Lake

Jimmy Lake Hired by Falcons’ Raheem Morris

The new coaching staff led by coach Raheem Morris and his defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake will try to improve on last season’s performance, even though much of the attention will be focused on Zac Robinson, the Atlanta Falcons‘ new offensive coordinator, and for good reason. Since Lake hadn’t worked as an NFL coach since 2011, many Falcons supporters may be unfamiliar with him. This past season, he served as the Los Angeles Rams‘ assistant head coach. which was, you may presumably assume, during Morris’s tenure as Tampa Bay’s coach. “I go so far back with Jimmy Lake, talking about our Tampa days,” Morris explained, “our core beliefs, some of the things we believe in, like-mindedness, his ability to go call it in college, really have a real tenure in college where you climb the ladder of the defensive coordinator, going to a head coach, having the ability to go through hard times, fighting through some things.”

While away from the NFL coaching scene for ten years, Lake established himself at the collegiate level. Lake left the Bucs in 2011 to become the defensive backs coach at Boise State in 2012. He stayed there for two seasons before moving to Washington to work for head coach Chris Petersen. He was promoted to the position of co-defensive coordinator after serving in that capacity for two seasons, and he took over as the team’s lone signal-caller for the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. After the 2019 campaign, Petersen announced his retirement, and Lake was elevated once more—this time to head coach. Lake would only be in that role for two seasons before getting dismissed nine games into the 2021 campaign. A week after Lake was suspended for pushing a player out of the way during a fight, he was fired. Lake then received his first opportunity to return to the NFL last season, working as a member of Sean McVay’s staff and reuniting with Morris after a year away from the game.

The two lifelong friends will now try to expand on the foundation that Atlanta’s former defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen laid. The Falcons’ passing defense was among the worst in the previous season, but they now rank eighth in terms of yards allowed per game. With his extensive background in coaching defensive backs, the 47-year-old would be a suitable choice to keep one of the best secondaries in the league.
