Could the New Orleans Saints’ Swiss Army Knife be on his way to the Denver Broncos?
As the 2024 NFL offseason approaches, the Denver Broncos’ dominoes keep falling. After an unimpressive 8–9
season has concluded, attention will now shift to how this team can make the required adjustments to secure a
coveted postseason position the following season.
Although the Broncos have not yet started the process of adding new players to the roster for on-field additions, head
coach Sean Payton has made some adjustments on the sidelines, which may result in more of his well-known players
joining him for the upcoming campaign.
Pete Carmichael was added to Payton’s staff by the Broncos last week as an offensive assistant. From 2009 to 23
Carmichael served as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, where he was a key member of Payton’s
staff.
Taysom Hill, the wild card, remained a vital part of Payton’s offensive scheme during his long tenure in New Orleans.
Hill has a rare combination of positional mobility and league-rare skill set that confuses opposition defences every
Sunday.
On the offensive side of the ball, Hill should be able to mesh at receiver, running back, or even quarterback. There
are now indications that Denver may be keeping an eye on the 33-year-old Saints player this summer.
The hiring of Carmichael, according to Mike Klis of 9NEWS, may unavoidably result in Hill being added to the
Broncos roster before to the 2019 season:
“With Carmichael joining the Broncos, there is a chance offensive hybrid player Taysom Hill may not be far behind. Hill is a Payton/Carmichael creation who plays quarterback, Wildcat running back and H-back receiver on offense and also has been known to contribute on special teams as a returner and gunner. In recent years, Hill has been especially used as a weapon in the red zone, where the Broncos struggled last year especially in goal-to-go situations. Hill currently has two years at $10 million each left on his contract although because none of that money is guaranteed it would be a surprise if adjustments are not made.”
It seems unlikely that Hill will have a comparable role in 2024 with a new Saints coaching staff if Payton and
Carmichael aren’t leading the offensive unit in New Orleans.
Given Hill’s contractual circumstances, a move to Denver seems far more likely. The Saints, who are in a worse cap
scenario than the Broncos, can cut relations with Taysom without any consequences because the money on his
current contract is non-guaranteed. This is a very reasonable decision if New Orleans wanted to trim $10 million
from their largest payroll in the league.
In 2023, Hill had 291 receiving yards and 401 rushing yards, with six touchdowns in the end zone. Despite being in
the latter stages of his playing career, he might still be a valuable asset to Payton’s offence in Denver and be a potent
weapon for the quarterback leading the charge the next season.
It might take some time to see if the Saints make a change this summer because Hill is still bound to New Orleans.
But if they do, the Broncos should be a top contender for the seven-year veteran of the NFL.
