Falcons: Justin Fields’ very low odds to join his next team

It appeared a few months ago that the Falcons might have a few quarterback alternatives to select from this offseason. But many of those possibilities no longer appear realistic as the season comes to a finish.

The general consensus in the league is that quarterbacks will be selected with the first three picks in the draft by the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots. This implies that the Falcons won’t be able to select Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or Caleb Williams in the draft. Naturally, all it takes for the Falcons to advance is for one of those top three teams to withdraw, giving them an opening. But that seems more like a pipe dream right now.

The Falcons may choose to sign one of Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, or Kirk Cousins in free agency. Although Mayfield and Cousins are both highly appealing alternatives, it’s also feasible that they will both remain with their current teams. Wilson is intriguing because of his contract, but there are concerns about his baggage and whether or not he would mesh well in Zac Robinson’s offense.

With Justin Fields the only realistic alternative, the Falcons may have to hunt the trade market for their starting quarterback in 2024. The odds that DraftKings has released regarding Justin Fields’ next team are, to put it mildly, astounding.

Justin Fields is currently even money to stay with the Chicago Bears according to DraftKings, which begs the question, “What in the hell do they know that we don’t?”

If you were to survey fifty NFL insiders, I’d bet that at least forty of them would wager that the Bears would trade Justin Fields. Here’s a short list of some of the industry elites that think Caleb Williams will be Chicago’s next quarterback.

 

However, Vegas is not giving up.

We do know that it will cost a king’s ransom if a team decides to trade for the Bears’ first overall pick. The Falcons might need to part with a top player like Kyle Pitts, three first-round selections, and additional assets. If the Bears aren’t in love with Caleb Williams, they should take a serious look at that enormous haul. However, if I were the Falcons, I would make that trade every single day of the week. Until they locate a franchise quarterback, everything else is irrelevant.

It is hardly shocking that the Falcons have the second-best chances of any team to sign Justin Fields. Since the start of the offseason, nearly all media sources have linked the two groups. The Falcons have a clear need, and Fields is a native of the Atlanta region. I am, however, a little less convinced than most with the fit.

Raheem Morris compared Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, the new offensive coordinator for the Falcons, to Zac Robinson. In addition, Robinson served as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles squad under McVay. Let’s consider the quarterbacks Shanahan and McVay have had success with: Kirk Cousins, Matthew Ryan, Brock Purdy, Jared Goff, and Matthew Stafford. Justin Fields at this stage of his career is not one of those highly precise passers.

In addition, any actions by Terry Fontenot since 2021 that would have persuaded him to reconsider Fields if Fontenot wasn’t interested in him at the time? His own team, who selected him eleventh overall three years ago, is thinking about dealing him for a second-round choice.

While I wouldn’t be against Justin Fields moving to Atlanta, there may be more smoke than fire in that scenario. Over the next few months, I will be closely monitoring the buzz around the Bears and Caleb Williams. Should something transpire there, the Falcons may finally have the ideal chance to select their franchise quarterback of the future.
