Everton and Liverpool could be set for dramatic new Merseyside derby showdown date.

There may be a dramatic new date for the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.

In the last week of the season, Everton and Liverpool might square off.

This week, the Premier League revealed that Sunday, March 17, at Goodison Park will be the date of the Merseyside derby. Due to the previous day’s switch, the game is now scheduled for a busy day in the city on St. Patrick’s Day, which also happens to be the Liverpool Half Marathon.

Everton and Liverpool could be set for dramatic new Merseyside derby showdown date.

But any planning for handling the massive numbers expected to attend those events may not matter. The match is contingent on Liverpool’s performance in the FA Cup; if the Reds advance, they will face Championship opponents in the fifth round; if they do, the quarterfinal will take precedence, and the derby will be rescheduled.

There would only be two midweeks left for the derby if Liverpool advanced to the Europa League semifinals, one of which is now the last week of a campaign in which both teams may be vying for victories.

Tonight, Southampton hosts Watford in a fourth-round rematch, while Liverpool will find out who they will play against in the FA Cup fifth round.

The victor will then make the trip to Anfield for a match where the leaders of the current top flight will be overwhelming favorites. If Liverpool prevails in that game, league organizers will have to look for a new date for the derby.

That task would not be simple. Between the current derby and the league season’s conclusion on May 19, there are nine midweeks. The March international break will cover the first two, with England playing friendlies with Belgium and Brazil.

The following midweek, during the first week of April, will see Everton travel to Newcastle United and Liverpool host Sheffield United in the league.

There will only be one midweek berth open towards the end of April, possibly on Tuesday 23 or Wednesday 24, and the final week of the season, if qualification through to the final four is achieved.

This is because four of the next six midweeks are occupied by the Europa League quarterfinals and semifinals. In the event that Liverpool advances to the FA Cup semifinals, their April 20 match against Fulham would have to be rescheduled, meaning that two Premier League games would be vying for those two spots.

End of Season: May 19

If Liverpool doesn’t make it to the final four in the Europa League, the calendar will open. However, the competition is one that the bookies have Liverpool heavily favoured, and it will have extra significance because it’s likely to be the final European trophy that manager Jurgen Klopp will be able to collect before he steps down at the end of the season.

Even if the derby is played in the last week, Liverpool will be hoping to be in the title battle all the way to the final game, while Everton could not even know what their situation is.

The Blues had fought their way through to the final week of the previous two seasons, and now that they have lost 10 points due to a violation of sustainability and profit regulations, a team that should have been comfortably in the middle of the table is among the bottom three.

It is awaiting the outcome of a challenge to the severity of that punishment in the hopes that it will improve its standing in the league table and help them defend a second alleged breach that is scheduled to be heard in a case that might not be resolved for several days after the season’s last game.
