The Celtic team’s tie with Aberdeen at Pittodrie this past weekend has certainly raised eyebrows.
So far this season, Celtic‘s failure to defeat a managerless team that is having trouble in the Scottish Premiership is pretty much it.
And despite Brendan Rodgers’ team’s continued struggles and lackluster performance, the club’s hiring decisions throughout the previous two transfer windows will always be the center of attention.
While many people are upset about the paucity of transfer activity in January, Michael Stewart was taken aback by Gustaf Lagerbielke, a £3 million summer acquisition, over the weekend.
The BBC analyst criticized Celtic’s hiring practices harshly and stated that there should have been “red flags” raised about the Allsvenskan Defender of the Year’s circumstances.
“And when you look at the likes of [Gustaf] Lagerbielke that they’re trying to offload a window later, that in itself tells you that that’s not a successful transfer,” Stewart stated on the Scottish Football Podcast.
“Because it is absurd to hire someone in the summer and attempt to fire them in January.
“From a fan’s perspective, that makes sense; there are warning signs and red flags everywhere, and he’s not alone.”
The scenario involving Gustaf Lagerbielke at Celtic is absurd.
It’s almost incomprehensible that the club can approve spending £3 million on a player who, after just six months at Parkhead, is suddenly considered unworthy.
Lagerbielke’s tenure at Celtic was not without its setbacks. He was forced into an inexperienced pairing with Liam Scales for the season’s opening Glasgow Derby due to a defensive injury problem.
Lagerbielke faltered at first, but he soon settled in, and Celtic prevailed 1-0.
But Lagerbielke has failed to salvage his career at Celtic since being red-carded in his Champions League debut.
Brendan Rodgers quickly decided that the 23-year-old was not good enough, and he was given the option to quit Celtic. In January, it appeared as though he was leaving.
Once more, Cameron Carter-Vickers sustained an injury that prevented Celtic from moving forward with their plan to transfer to Lecce, and Lagerbielke was told he had to stay.
Even worse, the highly sought-after Stephen Welsh was picked as the backup center-back for the trip to Pittodrie, meaning the Swede didn’t even make the bench.
Lagerbielke is in a really strange situation, and since Celtic also let go of Marco Tilio and Hyeokkyu Kwon on loan, there are now important questions about the club’s summer operations that need to be addressed.
