Russell Anderson believes Maik Nawrocki of Celtic was fortunate to avoid being sent off against Aberdeen.
After being set up by fellow new hire Adam Idah, Nicolas Kuhn scored the team’s first goal to tie the score. With Peter Leven taking temporary command, the Scottish Premiership champions gave an otherwise lackluster effort against a revitalized Dons team.
When Maik Nawrocki committed a second bookable offense in the 55th minute, Steven McLean chose not to dismiss him, which became a major source of controversy during the event. The 22-year-old scored the other goal of the game in a late challenge just outside his own penalty area, taking down Bojan Miovski. But McLean decided to give the hosts a free-kick rather than chastise the defender.
In a commentary, former Celtic great Chris Sutton expresses his opinion that the Pole was a “fortunate boy” who should not have received his marching orders. To be fair, Nawrocki’s first booking for a foul on Kalvin Phillips was lenient, so maybe these things balance one other out.
Russell Anderson believes Nawrocki of Celtics ought to have been substituted.
Former Aberdeen defender Russell Anderson was in the Sky Sports studio today and adamant that Nawrocki should’ve been dismissed during a period when the Dons were in the ascendency.
Cited via The Glasgow Times, the 45-year-old stated: “Very lucky. You talk about turning points in games and stuff, and I know there was a long way to go after the potential incident we’re talking about, but I just cannot see how that second incident is not a yellow card. “It baffles me how you can get a decision like that wrong, and it does make you wonder if he hadn’t been on a booking, would he have given him a yellow card.”
In the aftermath of proceedings, fans of both teams will argue the toss over whether Nawrocki should’ve been sent for an early bath. The matter is now redundant, and Celtic will be keen to move on from a missed opportunity to claim three points in the Northeast.
