Kris Boyd spots sign which proves Rangers signing has ‘clearly has potential’

Rangers legend Kris Boyd believes the fact Lens paid £4 million for Oscar Cortes is proof of the Colombian’s ‘potential’ as the forward looks to make his mark at the Scottish Premiership challengers.

Of the three players Rangers brought to Glasgow during the January transfer window – Oscar Cortes joining Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande on deadline day – the Ligue 1 loanee is perhaps the most intriguing.  It is only a few months, after all, since RC Lens – a club who can boast quite the track record when it comes to signing rough diamonds and turning them into polished gems invested £4 million to bring Cortes to France. And while the youngster featured in only a handful of Ligue 1 games during the first half of the campaign, Boyd believes the fact he was snapped up by a club who discovered Cheick Doucoure, Lois Openda, Kevin Danso and co is proof enough of his ‘potential’.

(Rangers manager Philippe) Clement will probably be 90 per-cent happy with his work in the window,” the former Ibrox hitman tells the Scottish Sun. “Mohamed Diomande looks to be a good capture, while Oscar Cortes adds another attacking body. “The Colombian kid will need time to settle. But (Cortes) clearly has potential when you consider RC Lens paid £4million for him last summer.”Cortes scored six goals and set up three more in his final 19 games for Millionaires in Colombia. The right-footed forward, with his explosive pace and power-packed shots, could help offset the loss of Abdallah Sima, out for the foreseeable future with an injury he picked up on African Cup of Nations duty.

If there is one area of the Rangers squad which looks a little light on numbers, however, it may be at centre-forward, with the revitalised Cyriel Dessers carrying the can alone at the moment. “Fabio Silva was in the building early and, while he can play as a number nine, Rangers are still light in that area,” Boyd adds. “Danilo, Kemar Roofe and Abdallah Sima are injured, and there will be a lot of pressure on Cyriel Dessers.“That is one area Clement could have done with strengthening.”Rangers host Livingston at Ibrox at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
