Ibrox News-Stephen McGowan shares Rangers-Shankland  ‘ the Greatest Problem’ after January transfer saga

Lawrence Shankland to Rangers transfer problem shared after January.

Stephen McGowan has revealed that the difficulty with Rangers’ attempts to sign Lawrence Shankland from Hearts in January was that the Ibrox club never inquired.

The Daily Mail journalist stated that many of ex-pros had tipped the move, to the point where the rumours were impossible to ignore, and the article expanded solely on assumptions.

With Rangers targeting a new striker in January, Shankland, the current SPFL top scorer and a lifelong Rangers supporter, the deal made lot of sense, but the narrative got away from the truth.

In his piece for the Scottish Daily Mail [3 February, page 109], McGowan stated that ex-pros had been promoting the Scotland striker’s move to Ibrox for weeks.

“The difficulty was that Rangers never made an enquiry about the Hearts captain, much alone a proposal. Assumption and presumption propelled the plot forward.

Shankland rumours made by the media?

When it became evident that no new striker would come through the door following the signing of Fabio Silva at the start of the

transfer window, it dawned on everyone that Shankland would stay at Hearts – at least for this season.

There had been so much speculation about a move to Ibrox that it seemed certain that his future lay in Glasgow, but as McGowan clarified, that talk never came from Ibrox.

Throughout the window, several reports appeared in the media. However, it appears that pundits, such as Barry Ferguson, drove the discussion rather than real information.

Ferguson acknowledged Rangers fans’ disappointment with Shankland’s absence when the window closed. However, no concrete interest was found at Ibrox.
