Are Cowboys ‘Way-Too-Early’ 2025 Super Bowl Contenders?
The top 10 non-championship teams with the best chances of making it to the Super Bowl in 2025 were chosen by Sports Illustrated, while Patrick Mahomes aims to face Brock Purdy’s Niners to win Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Among the teams vying to go to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans is the Dallas Cowboys.
Why? “The Cowboys have long been called pretenders because of their many years of postseason disappointment,” reports Sports Illustrated. “During the wild-card round, the Packers destroyed them at home this time. And Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, made the decision to have coach Mike McCarthy rerun it.”
As he approaches the final year of his five-year contract with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, McCarthy’s status beyond 2024 is unclear. Following the team’s Super Bowl victory in 2020, McCarthy joined the Cowboys with great expectations that they would advance far in the postseason. Despite having a loaded and skilled team, McCarthy has failed.
“For the past three decades, at least, the Cowboys have not benefited from giving themselves the best chances to progress in the playoffs. If the Cowboys win the NFC East and add 12 more victories during the regular season, a lot of people will sigh. In the postseason, Dak Prescott & Co. must demonstrate their worth,” SI added.
