With Serie A interest, Rangers’ transfer stance on Cyriel Dessers’ departure becomes clear.
Football Scotland reports that Rangers are unlikely to approve Cyriel Dessers’ departure this window if they can’t find a replacement.
Following Gianluca Di Marzio’s claim the day before that Verona and Torino are interested in signing the Nigerian, the news outlet released an update on January 31.
However, without the arrival of a new striker, no deal for the 29-year-old is going to proceed.
“However, it remains highly unlikely that the Light Blues would sanction a quick-fire return to Italy for Dessers without signing a replacement first,” the article states, citing the team’s lack of upfront options. Rangers scouts were reportedly there in the terraces when Lawrence Shankland scored in Hearts’ 2-0 victory against Aberdeen over the weekend. The Scotland international has been strongly linked to a move to Govan for the entire month.
Too big to lose Dessers
Rangers were rumored to be interested in Shankland, assuming Dessers would remain with the team.
In the upcoming weeks, the Gers will be severely short on offensive options, thus he cannot be bought to replace the Nigerian.
Danilo, Abdallah Sima and Kemar Roofe will be out for large parts of the campaign, leaving Dessers as their most reliable goal scoring option.
He’s got a decent return this season after a few initial struggles and it’s not likely that Philippe Clement will look to sanction his exit just as he’s started to fit in.
Had this been a few months ago, most fans would not have minded seeing the back of Dessers after his slow start to life at Ibrox.
Hopefully, this is nothing more than an initial interest and the clubs are unlikely to push forward in their pursuit to secure his services.
In other Rangers news, the Gers are on course to make a deadline day signing after what happened recently as a behind-the-scenes claim has emerged.
