Manchester United twist as Rangers want to seal Callan McKenna transfer at Ibrox

Rangers are one of the many clubs interested in Queen’s Park prospect Callan McKenna but a deal looks unlikely, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via its live blog [31 January, 1:01pm] that the homegrown shot-stopper is set to choose between three Premier League outfits, with Manchester United leading the race for his signature. It is understood that the sale of McKenna will earn Queen’s Park a minimum of £350,000, with multiple add-ons, including first-team progress and international caps, potentially raising the fee to well over £1million. Celtic, Rangers, Brighton, Southampton and Burnley have all kept tabs on the 17-year-old, with Manchester City and Arsenal also interested too.

Missing out

The Gers are already stacked for goalkeeping options at Ibrox, with 25-year-old Robby McCrorie and 23-year-old Kieran Wright unable to get a look-in under Philippe Clement.McKenna is one of the most sought-after young goalkeepers in all of Britain and would be a major coup for any European side. However, it is tough to battle against the likes of Man United when it comes to recruiting youngsters.

The bright lights of Old Trafford will normally always dazzle a teenage sensation, such as McKenna, which is why a move to Ibrox seems very unlikely at this point. It will still be a massive shame at Ibrox that they have been able to win over a Scotland U19 international, having been handed his first cap by Billy Stark at the age of 16. But a potential fee of over £1million is a difficult choice to make for a young player anyway.
