As Leeds United prepares a late January transfer bid for Ben Godfrey, Everton shares their position.
Leeds United has expressed interest in defender Ben Godfrey, but Sean Dyche has approved Everton’s sale of him, according to Carlton Palmer.
Godfrey was on the field for the entire ninety minutes as the Toffees held a clean sheet in their 0-0 Premier League draw against Fulham on Tuesday, January 30.
Palmer, however, asserts in an interview with Football League World [January 31] that Everton is prepared to sell provided Leeds submit a strong enough bid.
“The first loan offer for Everton defender Ben Godfrey was turned down by Leeds United,” he stated.
“In an effort to save their payroll costs, Sean Dyche and Everton have approved the center back’s departure.
“Leeds are working to finalize a late deal, and they are eager to sign Godfrey.”
Why?
Godfrey has only made two Premier League starts for Everton so far this season, but the fact that he was required against Fulham raises questions about this potential departure.
Although the 26-year-old is well down the roster at center back, he can also play full back, which is where he was utilized at Craven Cottage.
Godfrey’s contract at Goodison Park is set to expire at the conclusion of the following season, so the club is not in a financial crunch to sell him this month.
This is by no means to imply that the former Norwich City player, who knows Leeds boss Daniel Farke well, will become an instant mainstay under Sean Dyche.
He is a useful option, though, and Everton isn’t exactly in a position to bolster their defense without adding someone else.
One thing is for sure: if this agreement is going to go through, action must be taken quickly because the window closes at 11 p.m. on February 1.
In other Everton news, it has been stated that the Toffees have made a £17 million offer to sign a player prior to the deadline.
