Celtic and Rangers’ Premiership rivals sack manager with ex Gers player taking charge
Another Scottish Premiership manager has been relieved of his duties, with Aberdeen confirming the departure of former Celtic great Barry Robson.
The Dons confirmed the news in a statement posted today (January 31) at midday.
Former Rangers player Peter Leven, a first-team coach at Pittodrie who was on the books at Ibrox between 2000 and 2004, will take charge in the meantime, with Scott Anderson assisting him.
Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack stated, “Although it was a difficult decision, the Board believed the change was necessary and in the best interests of Aberdeen FC.” Barry earned the right to be Aberdeen manager and was aware of our high expectations when he took on the post.
“We gave Barry as much time and support as we could in the hope and expectation that he would return us to the league form we saw in the spring of last year.” Given the Club’s talented roster, our current league standing is unacceptable.
“With 17 games remaining in the league and the Scottish Cup, this change is vital to help us focused on our goals for the rest of the season.
It is critical that we honor Barry for his major contributions to Aberdeen as a player, coach, and manager.
He is a terrific man who worked really hard in everything he did for us, and it goes without saying that we wish him and Steve the best.
“The Club, as a company, is doing well. We have no bank debt, have had considerable commercial development, and have sold record season tickets
and AberDNA memberships. We also have an evolving player trade strategy, which allows us to invest much more in the football business than our operational profits.
“However, as chairman, I accept responsibility, alongside the board, for the managerial upheavals.
It’s exhausting for everyone, especially our fans and the managers who worked hard but lost their jobs.
We’ve requested First Team Coach Peter Leven, with assistance from Scott Anderson, to lead training on an interim basis.”
