Mics Picked Up Jared Goff’s Classy Message to Brock Purdy After Lions’ Loss to 49ers

In the NFC championship game on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy defeated the Detroit Lions and quarterback Jared Goff. Despite the devastating defeat, the seasoned quarterback continued to express his appreciation for the second-year player. The two quarterbacks who made the playoffs, Goff (the No. 1) in the 2016 draft and Purdy (the “Mr. Irrelevant,” the last choice in the 2023 draft, had mutual admiration following the game.

A video captured by NFL Films after the game showed the quick, but memorable, interaction between the two quarterbacks. “What a good baller, man,” Goff said to Purdy. “Love what you stand for. Good luck.”

Presumably, the Lions starter was alluding to Purdy’s improbable journey to take the starting position for the 49ers. When he started his rookie season, he was the team’s third-string quarterback, but by the conclusion, he had led them to the NFC championship. This season, he guided the team to the Super Bowl as the full-time starter. Leading the Los Angeles Rams to Super Bowl LIII in the 2018–19 season, Goff experienced what it’s like to play in a Super Bowl early in his career. Sunday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET is Super Bowl LVIII, which pits the 49ers against the Chiefs of Kansas City.
