Cowboys must consider re-signing eight-time Pro Bowler
The Dallas Cowboys must decide whether to re-sign left tackle Tyron Smith this summer, in addition to extending quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract.
ESPN’s Todd Archer suggested the 33-year-old may retire. In 2023, he missed four games due to injuries, and the Cowboys implemented a special
practice schedule in which he worked on the side while still suiting up.
Nonetheless, Smith is one of the league’s greatest offensive guards. He was named second-team All-Pro and received an 83.7 grade from Pro Football
Focus, ranking him fourth among his position players. Giving him a new contract is not a costly idea.According to Spotrac, his contract is worth $7.4 million over one year.
The Cowboys are not in a position to provide new contracts. Spotrac thinks they are $14.29 million over the cap. Several players, like running back
Tony Pollard and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, are also hitting free agency. This means Dallas must make difficult decisions and let certain players depart.
Moving on from Smith would be risky, but not impossible. The eight-time Pro Bowler has not played a full season since 2015.

The Cowboys can also try to locate a successor through the draft. Diante Lee of The Athletic predicts Houston’s Patrick Paul will be the 24th pick in
the upcoming draft. However, he remarked that the 23-year-old requires time to mature.
If Smith wants to play another season, Dallas should try to re-sign him on a short-term contract. They do not want to rely on a rookie to immediately
develop into a competent starter. Not to add that Prescott requires trustworthy pass-blockers to thrive and help the club advance in the playoffs.
