Ally McCoist sees Rangers Jack Butland claim laughed off as Jeff Stelling makes Celtic argument in fiery keeper debate

Ranger Ally McCoist observes In a heated keeper dispute, Jeff Stelling presents a Celtic argument, to which Jack Butland laughs off.

The discussion about Euro 2024 was ignited by the iconic broadcaster and the Rangers icons sparring on the airwaves.

Jeff Stelling believes that if Rangers’ performance gets Jack Butland on a plane to Germany, Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart should have a good chance of qualifying for Euro 2024.

The 30-year-old, who was brought to Glasgow by Michael Beale in the summer, has been a huge asset for Philippe Clement’s team. With his form so strong and his desire to return to the international stage, several commentators are speculating that an England recall may be imminent ahead of the summer’s major event.

On talkSPORT’s morning program, McCoist and Stelling got into a heated debate on England’s Euro 2024 squad, with McCoist eager to promote the number one for Rangers as a player who should be traveling. The Ibrox icon responded, “I am speaking on behalf of the family here,” when asked who should go. Jeff has been notified via text by my sons that Butland is in all day. He has performed flawlessly. He performs once a week.”

McCoist said, “Important ones,” but Stelling was not persuaded. The host, after reading out a listener’s argument in favor of Butland, disregarded the goalkeeper’s superiority over Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal and Jordan Pickford of Everton.

“It doesn’t matter what club he is at,” Stelling continued. He hasn’t played for England since 2018, and in my opinion, he won’t be returning. Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone competing at Crystal Palace for first place…”

McCoist would have none of it, telling Stelling that since neither of those two options plays organized football, the host claims that’s precisely why neither will be leaving either. “I tell you what, Ally, the third-ranked goalkeeper in the England team won’t play,” he said.

“You take 21-year-old James Trafford, a Burnley player who has competed for England at every level. Even if you give him the opportunity to attend a major competition, he won’t participate. Unless Pickford is unlucky enough to get an injury, in which case Ramsdale will start every game.

“James Trafford is clearly a superb young goalie, even though he won’t be playing. With all due respect, Jack Butland is not the future just yet; he is the future. Despite having many unremarkable years, he is doing admirably for the Rangers. You brought up Joe Hart, so why don’t we also visit there?”
