Midfield target denies Celtic transfer talks as South Korean star reaffirms European ambitions

As the January transfer deadline approaches, Jeong Ho-yeon, a midfield target for Celtic, has downplayed any reports that he is in negotiations with the Scottish champions.

The 23-year-old, who won K-League 1 Young Player of the Year with Gwangju last season, was first connected to the Hoops in the summer following his quick rise. After stating his desire to finalize a transfer to a European team, he said he was informed about Celtic’s interest by his agency.

Brendan Rodgers is still looking for players this month to bolster their title challenge, so Jeong reiterated his intention to leave South Korea and move to Europe, but he says he hasn’t heard anything regarding a possible move to Glasgow.

Jeong was cautioned by Gwangju manager Lee Jung-Hyo not to put himself in a “clumsy situation” by transferring to Scotland too soon in his career, but it’s obvious the player is keen to see how he performs in a new setting.

“It’s not something I’ve heard about moving to Celtic,” the Gwangju celebrity said to Jeonnam Ilbo. “However, I’m still working toward my goal of pushing myself overseas. It will be an opportunity for me to grow as a player, and I want to see where I stand and how I am perceived in a new setting.”

Oh Hyeon-gyu, Kwon Hyeok-kyu, and Yang Hyun-jun, Jeong’s countrymen, were previously signed by Celtic, but none of them has been able to establish a consistent starting position. With the Asian Cup in full swing, Parkhead will continue to be without the services of important midfielder Reo Hatate in the upcoming week.
