Rangers budget update as ‘Huge’ Mohamed Diomande transfer news drops at Ibrox

According to the Daily Record, Philippe Clement has committed to using a “huge whack” of his Rangers transfer budget to get Mohamed Diomande.

The newspaper published a story on its website on January 27, following the midfielder from Nordsjaelland’s signing by the Gers for a six-month loan before a permanent deal of £4.3 million was made in the summer.

Clement‘s decision to spend the majority of his money on a midfield player startled some people around Ibrox, but the Belgian views the player as an investment for the future.

“An assessment is made by the whole club, what he is worth now and what he can be worth in the future,” he said.

“So it’s a longer-term investment in that way. We had a lot of good talks together and I think he’s convinced because of the club, the fans, the project and the way of working and growing as a player.”

The Michael Beale effect

The Rangers are still suffering from Michael Beale‘s tenure as manager after he spent the majority of the team’s summer payroll on Sam Lammers, Danilo, Jose Cifuentes, and Cyriel Dessers.

As a result, Clement’s ability to add players this January in an effort to solidify his place in the starting lineup has been restricted.

The Belgian will be eager to increase the depth of experience in his team, especially in midfield, given the amount of injuries he has sustained since joining in October. This puts great understanding into Diomande’s signing.

It seems sense that some people are concerned about paying over £4 million to buy a 22-year-old, particularly given Rangers’ requirement for a legitimate front-line talisman. However, as Wolves had previously loaned out Fabio Silva, focus shifted to other areas of the field.

At the age of 22, Diomande has already made over a century of appearances for Nordsjaelland in the Danish Superligaen, so there is little questioning his skill. It will be interesting to watch how he performs and blends in with the Scottish culture.
