Sources: Leeds United make official approach to Everton over Ben Godfrey deal

Sources: Leeds United formally approaches Everton on a potential Ben Godfrey move.

According to sources who spoke to Football Insider, Leeds United has formally approached Everton about a late-window loan agreement for defender Ben Godfrey.

Earlier today (January 24), Football Insider disclosed that the Whites were having initial discussions about making a loan move for the 26-year-old.

After Godfrey’s transfer to Serie A team Atalanta fell through earlier this month due to Italy’s repeal of the tax advantage, Leeds focused on acquiring Godfrey.

The center back will be allowed to depart Goodison Park this month as Everton looks to cut costs on payroll, according to manager Sean Dyche.

Leeds, led by Daniel Farke, is eager to bolster its team’s caliber as they aim to return to the Premier League.

Godfrey has had difficulty playing throughout the 2023–24 season since Dyche has found a reliable backup this year.

He has played just three times totalling 180 minutes of action in the current season.

The two-cap England international, who is under contract at Everton until June

2025 has played in 99 Premier League games for the Toffees and Norwich in different stints.

Godfrey might be a flexible option while on loan at Elland Road because he can play defensive midfield as well as across the backline.

With 29 games played, Leeds, who hasn’t added a player this month, is presently fourth in the Championship.

After losing 10 points earlier in the season, Everton is now just one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League standings.
