Raiders Under Contract: T Thayer Munford Jr.
This season, Las Vegas Raiders offensive tackle Thayer Munford Jr. made a name for himself as a reliable member of the Raiders’ offensive line. During training camp, the 2022 seventh-round selection engaged in a positional struggle for the right tackle spot with fellow offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. Eluemunor earned the starting position for the following four games after the two shared the starting position in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos. After that, things started to change, with Munford starting in Weeks 6, 7, and 8. After that, Munford’s neck issue kept him out of Week 9.
When captain Kolton Miller missed the next two games due to a shoulder injury, the 24-year-old offensive tackle’s duty became even more important than it had before. Munford rose to the challenge, starting games against the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. After returning for Week 12, Miller’s shoulder ailment prevented him from playing in back-to-back games once more. Miller’s reps were restricted, therefore Munford would start those two games in addition to the next two. He subsequently missed the season’s last game due to a knee injury he had sustained the week before and an illness.
Munford started five games as a rookie and went on to start ten of his fifteen appearances. Munford’s $3.7 million rookie contract is set to expire in two years. The importance of Munford to the Raiders was demonstrated this season. Even though Eluemunor took the lead in the position battle at the beginning, it was a close contest that only improved both of them. Munford proved he could step up during Miller’s absences, and that will be crucial in his third NFL season.
