Beggars belief- Chris Sutton calls out Celtic’s Recruitment Failure.
Despite possessing a group of over 30 first-team players, Brendan Rodgers has been caught short at a position that is normally thought to be easy to cover.
Taylor has started all 30 games for Celtic, and despite the hard schedule through December, Alexandro Bernabei was kept at bay with the exception of a late replacement appearance in the defeat to Hearts.
Celtic have challenging away games against Aberdeen, Hibs, and St Mirren over the next two weeks, with Rodgers having to dig deep or fit a new addition into his side’s style of play.
Assessing the lack of transfer activity in the Daily Record, Sutton explains:
Everyone thinks Celtic will just roll over Ross County today. They should, but that’s not the point. The point is this is they have left themselves light. Alexandro Bernabei hasn’t been trusted for a while and this was the one position that urgently needed to be sorted out. The fact it’s not yet been done by now beggars belief.
Is this on Rodgers? Is it due to Mark Lawwell and his team? Is it on the board? For me, it’s about recruitment, and the truth is that Celtic’s market appears to be more complicated than it should be.
Rodgers has spoken about quality and not adding players for the sake of it. That is OK if you are discussing improvement. However, he stated last week that Celtic needed to be wary of a loading issue with Taylor, which was about support and backup.
Taylor doesn’t cut it defensively in the Champions League and you should always be trying to upgrade every position for that but there’s no excuse for being short domestically.
The quality, however, puzzles me. Rodgers stated prior to the window opening that he wanted it, but he only has one in the door by January 27. What has happened over the last six months? Where are the signs of behind-the-scenes activity?
We all understand the model, and Celtic were on the right track in the Champions League last season, but they aren’t now, and they’re also creating themselves unneeded problems at home. That is worthy of fan attention. Why is the club not on the right side of these signings? What has happened on that front since Ange Postecoglou left?
Rodgers will be asked about transfer activities after today’s match, after that it is unlikely that he’ll be in the media before the window closes at midnight on Thursday.
Throughout December Rodgers repeatedly emphasised the need to bring in quality signings during the January window, so far only Nicolas Kuhn has been added to his squad
