Bruins Wrap: Boston Overcomes Penalties To Top Senators In OT
On Thursday night, the Boston Bruins defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in overtime at Canadian Tire Centre after a brief journey across the border. With a record of 18-24-2, the Senators are still in last place in the Atlantic Division, while the Bruins improved to 30-9-9.
ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
The Bruins needed a bounce-back win after dropping a tight contest to the Carolina Hurricanes 24 hours prior. But penalties almost got in Boston’s way from returning to the win column against the Senators.
The Bruins gave the Senators six power plays by committing nine penalties, some of which were undoubtedly dubious calls that infuriated Jim Montgomery. Two of those were converted by Ottawa, but they did so at the right moments, tying the score late in the third frame. However, Brad Marchand saved the day for the Bruins, who didn’t perform well and were outshot 37–23, just when they needed him.
STARS OF THE GAME
— Marchand lifted the Bruins to a win as he buried a shot past Senators goalie Joonas Korpisalo 1:48 into the extra frame. Charlie Coyle assisted on the game-deciding tally.
Jeremy Swayman continues to show why he is an All-Star. The 25-year-old turned aside 35 Ottawa shots to improve to 16-3-7 on the season.
— Vladimir Tarasenko knotted things up for the Senators with 3:18 left in regulation on the power play. It was his 13th goal of the season.
WAGER WATCH
FanDuel Sportsbook has put a +132 odds on Coyle to record an assist. David Pastrnak’s goal in the first period was assisted by Coyle, who won the faceoff, giving him his 23rd assist of the year. On this prop bet, a $100 stake would have returned $232 in total.
The Bruins will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday to play the Flyers, continuing their road trip. Watch the game along with an hour of pregame programming starting at 12:30 p.m. ET on Wells Fargo Center.
