Rangers now want to sign English defender in deadline-busting transfer – report
Glasgow Rangers are interested in Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas, the Daily Mail reports.
Philippe Clement is thought to be looking for another full-back alternative due to questions about
Ridvan Yilmaz’s future,
while Borna Barisic’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season.
As a result, the Mail claimed in its print edition on Wednesday (24 January, page 67) that
the Glasgow giants are keeping an eye on Englishman Thomas, 22, in case he makes a late transfer.
Not sure about this one.
It is true that Rangers’ left-back position appears to be a problem that they could do with resolving
before the end of the transfer window,
as they cannot afford deficiencies in the second half of the season.
What will happen with Yilmaz is anyone’s guess. It looks like he is pretty keen to leave to ensure he can
make Turkey’s squad for Euro 2024, and that would leave Barisic as the only senior option in the squad.
However, Thomas does not appear to be a particularly intriguing alternative. The 22-year-old spent the
first half of the season on loan at Premier League club Sheffield United, making 12 appearances but
struggling for form until his loan was canceled.
He meets the description in terms of age and resale potential, but it appears that Clement has better
options available to him, and this feels like a non-starter. But if the Rangers choose to pursue it, we can
trust Clement.
